Places to Explore on Catamaran in Nicaragua

One of the most amazing aspects of Nicaragua is that there isn’t just one beautiful area; the entire country is gorgeous! While, of course, our volcanoes, towns, and jungles are fantastic, the main draw is the beach. If you’re considering a sail tour in Tola or the surrounding region, you probably have quite a few questions about the beach. One we get most often is exactly how many beaches there are.

How Many Beaches Does Tola Have?

Ten kilometers (6.2 miles) west of Rivas is the agricultural community of Tola. There aren’t just one or even two beaches there. In fact, there is a long string of beautiful beaches that make up 30 kilometers of Pacific shoreline. For Americans, that means there are nearly 19 miles of white sandy beaches. These 18.6 miles make up a total of 19 beaches in Tola.

Beaches in Tola

It’s nearly impossible to list all the beaches you may see on a sail tour in Tola. A few of our top favorites include:

Playa Gigante

Traveling up the northern coast from San Juan del Sur and an hour outside Rivas is Playa Gigante. This is, in fact, the first beach you come to after the city of Tola. It is named after the Punta Pie de Gigante. Meaning The Giant’s Foot in English, this name refers to the rock formation you’ll see on the left side of the beach. Playa Gigante is known the world over as a beautiful crescent beach.

There is a thriving community in and near Playa Gigante, mostly fishermen and people working in the nearby resorts. Near Playa Gigante you will find a few dozen homes occupied by about 800 locals, several restaurants, hotels, and several surf camps.

Surfing is huge here! The sport has had a big impact on the community’s economic situation, and it’s continuing to grow. The reason for this is that it’s one of the best surfing spots in the world, and because it’s relatively unknown to those outside of the surfing community it isn’t yet spoiled with too many people.

That isn’t to say if you don’t want to surf you shouldn’t go to Playa Gigante. While there, you can also carry out other activities such as sport fishing, a sail tour in Tola, diving, and going hiking and rappelling. You can also go horseback riding right on the beach!

Guasacate Beach

As we said, there are many beaches to choose from, and you’re sure to enjoy them all! A second favorite is Guasacate Beach. This is a serene, natural site that is known for its peace and tranquility. On this beach, you can soak up the sun, swim in the water, play beach sports, go horseback riding, and much more. If you’re looking for a laid-back beach vibe, this is it!

Colorado Beach

The beautiful Colorado Beach is known for its white sand. This paradise invites you into complete relaxation as you spend the day around nature. Watching marine fauna and taking walks on the beach and its surroundings are highly recommended, as you won’t see a scene like this very often!

Punta Teonoste

While here in Tolo, you do not miss the once-in-a-lifetime experience of seeing the sea turtle nursery in Punta Teonoste. Punta Teonoste is intimate and relaxed. You can observe the spawning of sea turtles that arrive on this beach, learn about the conservation work that is carried out in this reserve, and be part of this team that defends nature. This magical place is located on the southern coast of the Pacific side of Nicaragua.
