How Safe are Sailing Tours?
You want your family vacation to be a lot of things. Of course, you want it to be fun! You also would like for it to be a way to get everyone outside, away from screens and into the fresh air. All of this healthy Vitamin D brings us to our next point, you also want your family vacation to be safe.
When it comes to Nicaragua tourism safety, is sailing a safe option? It certainly sounds fun, but being out in the middle of the ocean with waves crashing also sounds a bit dangerous. Is it? And what safety equipment is required on a boat?
Let’s answer those questions right now and put your fears to rest!
Are Catamarans Safe?
For one thing, when you book a sailing tour through Esmeralda Sailing, you are not booking a vacation on a sailboat but rather a catamaran. This makes a huge difference when it comes to safety! By their nature, large catamarans, like the one we have, are exceptionally safe offshore.
Probably what you are most concerned with is waves hitting the boat and making it difficult to walk around. Could a giant wave actually hit the boat and make it flip over? This is called capsizing, and not something of concern on a catamaran. Esmeralda Sailing’s large, modern catamaran boat has plenty of buoyancy and exceptional roll inertia. What does this mean exactly? Together, these make a capsize, or inversion, nearly impossible. A 30-foot breaking wave hitting a catamaran beam will simply make the boat surf sideways.
Catamarans are very stable and have natural buoyancy, making them unsinkable. Yes, they can capsize in seriously bad weather, but we certainly won’t be sending your family on your sailing tour during a hurricane.
Plus, moving around on a flat deck is a breeze. You don’t need to worry about the waves making the “ground” beneath you unstable. Trips, falls, or anything like that won’t be a problem at all.
What about the boat sinking? Surely this is a possibility? Actually, it is not! Because catamarans don’t have a big heavy keel loaded with lead, even if you have a hole in the boat, it will float.
Catamarans like ours have so much buoyancy built in that they are next to impossible to sink. In fact, many people take catamarans all the way across the Atlantic ocean– that’s how safe and stable they are!
What Safety Equipment Is Required on My Boat?
Although catamarans are very safe sailing boats, there are various safety items that should always be accessible to every person on board. This includes all crew and passengers. Part of a boat’s safety equipment should include:
- Life jackets and wearable personal flotation devices (PFDs)
- Fire extinguishers
- Visual distress signals
- Sound signaling devices
