3 Reasons Why Catamarans Are Popular
A traditional sailboat is a monohull. In layman’s terms, it has only one hull centered around a heavy keel. A catamaran, on the other hand, is balanced on two hulls with the sails in the middle. The space separating the two hulls is often filled by a cockpit, interior cabin space, and additional deck space.
Space, stability, and shallow draft are three key advantages to chartering a catamaran. Let’s go a bit more in detail for each one.
More Space
With two hulls and the space in between, there tends to be more room on a catamaran, both above and below decks. They offer those aboard a vast deck space. This space is great for a group, whether it is a family with kids or friends or several couples, as everyone can enjoy their time on the boat without feeling cramped. You and your group will have all the room you need to lay in the sun, dance to your favorite music, do yoga, play games, and more.
More space also gives more privacy to guests as well, as you can go below deck to use the restroom or lay a little one down for a nap. The Esmeralda is so large we have bedrooms, bathrooms, and a kitchen. Our catamaran is comfortable and offers large and comfortable living spaces, making it ideal for longer trips.
Increased Stability
If you’re prone to seasickness or stumbling, you want to book your trip on a catamaran. There’s less rock and roll aboard a catamaran! Seasickness in catamaran is much less common than other vessels because the ride is much smoother. Unlike traditional monohull sailboats that toss back and forth in the waves, a catamaran glides above it all.
If you’re looking for relaxation, the ability to enjoy the sea and the sun, drinking a glass of delicious wine and eating a yummy fruit platter on the table, you want a catamaran. It all has to do with the fact that the boat has two hulls, not one. This balance also makes catamarans better in rougher seas. While a traditional boat may rock around in the waves, a catamaran is smooth sailing
Shallow Draft
That’s not all there is to love. You may be surprised that a boat so large can get you so close to your favorite beach or island. This is one of the great things about choosing this option. A shallow draft, rather than a deep keel characteristic of monohulls, means it’s possible to get closer to shore. You can anchor in much shallower water, near beaches and the islands that make the Pacific Coast of Nicaragua so special.
The water around places like Isla Anciana and Playa Blanca is pretty shallow once you get close to shore. With a traditional sailboat, you’d need to exit the boat pretty far from the beach and swim there. This makes yoga on the boat or getting little kids to shore pretty tough. Thankfully, the Esmeralda is able to get you very close to the sand, despite being so large. The Esmeralda can get you right up next to some of the most gorgeous beaches on the Pacific Coast! This is a major reason why catamarans are popular.
